About us

We are a proudly First Nations–owned business built on culture, community, and capability.

Yalgan’s story

The inspiration for Yalgan Group began during a morning walk along the beach, where I captured a photo that marked the moment the concept came to me. I knew I wanted to create an Indigenous company dedicated to supporting First Nations youth and Elders, but the name had not yet revealed itself. What I did know was that the Sun would play a vital role in the identity of the company.

As I reflected on my heritage, I felt drawn to honour my grandmother, her sister, and my uncles,  the Mundine family. I have always felt immense pride in my Uncle Tony Mundine, a renowned boxer, and my Uncle Mick Mundine, who built the new Block in Redfern through his housing company. My family, who are Birrpai/Dunghutti/Bundjalung mob, have instilled in me a deep sense of cultural responsibility and strength.

In exploring my language, I discovered the Bundjalung word for Sun: Yalgan. And from that moment, Yalgan Group was created.

My cultural journey continued throughout 2025, when I was personally invited by the Murrook Land Council in Williamtown, NSW, to attend their Culture Day at Stockton Beach Dunes on 15 November. I attended alongside family members Emily Heath and Paula Maling. Our involvement was strengthened by our connection with Justin Ridgeway, who had participated in one of our earlier Youth Gatherings. He was moved by the shell and grass skirt workshops and welcomed the opportunity for our Goori Bugg family to represent at the event.

Earlier that month, on 1 November, we held a Youth Gathering at Saltwater Beach. I facilitated shell and grass skirt workshops with the youth, creating a space for cultural expression and connection. My cousin, Emily Heath, painted me up for the day, and I joined in several cultural dance performances. The gathering also drew the interest of Koori Radio, who interviewed me about the work we are doing and the importance of cultural engagement for young people

These moments reflect the heart of Yalgan Group - honouring culture, empowering community, and carrying forward the strength of our ancestors.
